What is a structural inspection? What I need to know.

When buying a new home, building or structure, it is important to commission a structural engineer to perform a structural inspection.

Structural Inspection

This is a visual assessment determining the structural soundness of a home or building’s weight bearing elements. What are weight bearing elements? The structural integrity is comprised of framing, foundation, beams, columns, posts, footings, headers, lintels, rafters, or trusses. These are all bearing elements because they interact and connect with one another to create the primary structure, but they are also helping to support aesthetic type of elements too like sheetrock, cabinets, roofing, etc.

Scheduling a structural inspection is easy with Quantum Structural Engineering and Design, LLC. Simply call (307-286-5255), email or submit a website inquiry. Upon the agreed upon date and time of your inspection, the structural engineer will arrive and perform a visual assessment of the structure in question. This may require entry into crawl spaces to view the foundation, or attic to see trusses. Being prepared to escort the engineer throughout the property will be important. Inspections can be performed for an overall assessment or of an area of interest. Depending on the need of the inspection there are several outcomes.

Structural Inspection Outcomes

  1. Verbal Assessment - The engineer can provide an onsite consultation to help guide decision making like removing a wall, widening an opening, etc.

  2. Written Assessment - The engineer will provide a written explanation of the structural assessment in an email or letter depending on the scope.

  3. Stamped Letter - The engineer will perform the assessment in a formal letter that includes a stamp. When an engineer stamps a letter, it is their professional seal acknowledging their analysis.
